Brutalism Print Series and Concertina Booklet, Design and Illustration by Thomas Danthony, Published by Black Dragon Press, 2014

I was recently invited by Black Dragon Press to contribute commentary to a print series on Brutalism in London. My writing is part of a concertina booklet (seen above) available to accompany the prints or on its own. As I wrote in my introduction, the three illustrations by Thomas Danthony make their subjects - Erno Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower, Sir Denys Lasdun’s Royal College of Physicians and National Theatre - “appear weightless and strangely ethereal, acquiring a ghostly, auratic quality that no photograph can capture. These images cast Brutalism in an unexpected light, revealing its unusual synthesis of past and future, heroism and familiarity.”

See the Black Dragon Press webstore at 3pm GMT to purchase the prints individually or as a set.
